Ingredients

4 medium-sized apples (Granny Smith or Honeycrisp work well)

2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted

1/4 cup brown sugar (light or dark)

1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg

1/4 teaspoon salt

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

1 tablespoon lemon juice

1/2 cup rolled oats

1/4 cup chopped walnuts or pecans (optional)

2 tablespoons all-purpose flour

Vanilla ice cream or whipped cream (for serving, optional)

Instructions

Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and lightly grease a baking dish with cooking spray or additional melted butter.

Prepare the Apples: Core the apples and slice them into thin, even wedges. Place the slices in a large mixing bowl.

Add Flavorings: In a smaller bowl, mix the melted butter, brown sugar, ground cinnamon, ground nutmeg, salt, vanilla extract, and lemon juice until well combined. Pour this mixture over the apple slices and toss until they are evenly coated.

Add Crunch: In another bowl, combine the rolled oats, chopped nuts (if using), and all-purpose flour. Mix well, then sprinkle this oat mixture over the apple slices in the main bowl, tossing gently to ensure even distribution.

Bake the Apples: Transfer the coated and mixed apple slices into the prepared baking dish. Spread them out evenly and then cover the dish with aluminum foil to help retain moisture.

Cooking Time: Bake in the preheated oven for 20 minutes. After that, remove the foil and bake for an additional 15-20 minutes, or until the apples are tender and the topping is golden brown.

Serve: Allow the baked apple slices to cool slightly before serving. They are delightful on their own or topped with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a dollop of whipped cream.
