Ingredients

1 block (14 oz) firm tofu, drained and pressed

2 tablespoons cornstarch

2 tablespoons vegetable oil

1/4 cup soy sauce

2 tablespoons hoisin sauce

1 tablespoon maple syrup

1 tablespoon rice vinegar

1 teaspoon sesame oil

1 teaspoon grated fresh ginger

2 cloves garlic, minced

1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional)

1 head of butter or romaine lettuce, leaves separated

1/2 cup shredded carrots

1/4 cup chopped green onions

1/4 cup chopped cilantro

Sesame seeds for garnish (optional)

Instructions

Prepare the Tofu: Cut the pressed tofu into 1-inch cubes. In a bowl, toss the tofu with cornstarch until evenly coated. This will help achieve a crispy texture when cooked.

Make the Glaze: In a small bowl, whisk together soy sauce, hoisin sauce, maple syrup, rice vinegar, sesame oil, grated ginger, minced garlic, and red pepper flakes (if using). Set aside.

Cook the Tofu: Heat vegetable oil in a non-stick skillet over medium-high heat. Once hot, add the tofu cubes in a single layer, leaving some space between each piece. Cook for about 5-7 minutes until golden brown on all sides, turning occasionally.

Add the Glaze: Pour the prepared glaze over the crispy tofu. Reduce the heat to medium and cook for another 2-3 minutes, stirring gently to ensure all the tofu pieces are coated evenly. Allow the sauce to thicken slightly.

Assemble the Boats: Lay out the lettuce leaves on a serving platter. Spoon the sticky glazed tofu evenly into each leaf. Top with shredded carrots, chopped green onions, and cilantro.

Garnish and Serve: Sprinkle sesame seeds over the top for an added crunch and flavor. Serve immediately as a fresh, crunchy appetizer or main dish.
