Ingredients

2 cups ziti pasta

1 tablespoon olive oil

1 pound ground beef or Italian sausage (or a plant-based alternative)

1 small onion, diced

3 cloves garlic, minced

1 jar (24 ounces) marinara sauce

1 can (15 ounces) ricotta cheese

2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese, divided

1 cup grated Parmesan cheese, divided

1 teaspoon dried basil

1 teaspoon dried oregano

Salt and pepper to taste

Fresh basil, for garnish (optional)

Instructions

Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).

Cook the Pasta: In a large pot, bring salted water to a boil. Add the ziti and cook for about 6-7 minutes until al dente (it will cook further in the oven). Drain and set aside.

Sauté the Meat & Veggies: In a large oven-safe skillet or a Dutch oven, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the ground beef (or sausage) and cook until browned, breaking it apart with a spatula. Drain any excess fat. Add the diced onion and minced garlic, and sauté until the onion becomes translucent, about 3-4 minutes.

Combine Ingredients: Stir in the marinara sauce, cooked ziti, dried basil, dried oregano, salt, and pepper. Mix until well combined.

Layer the Cheeses: Reduce the heat to low, then dollop spoonfuls of ricotta cheese over the pasta mixture. Sprinkle half of the mozzarella and half of the Parmesan cheese on top.

Bake: Transfer the skillet to the preheated oven and bake uncovered for 20 minutes.

Add Final Cheese Layer: Remove from oven and sprinkle the remaining mozzarella and Parmesan cheese over the top. Return to the oven and bake for an additional 10-15 minutes, or until the cheese is bubbly and golden.

Garnish and Serve: Once baked, allow to cool slightly, garnish with fresh basil if desired, and serve hot.
