Ingredients

2 3/4 cups all-purpose flour

1 teaspoon baking soda

1/2 teaspoon baking powder

1 cup unsalted butter, softened

1 1/2 cups white sugar

1 egg

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

1 teaspoon almond extract (optional)

3–4 tablespoons milk

Pinch of salt

Colored sprinkles (for decoration)

Buttercream Frosting:

1 cup unsalted butter, softened

4 cups powdered sugar

2 tablespoons heavy cream

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Food coloring (optional)

Instructions

Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).

Mix Dry Ingredients: In a bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, baking powder, and salt. Set aside.

Cream Butter and Sugar: In a large mixing bowl, cream the softened butter and white sugar together until light and fluffy (about 3-5 minutes).

Add Egg and Extracts: Beat in the egg, followed by the vanilla and almond extract (if using). Mix until well combined.

Combine Wet and Dry Ingredients: Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture. Use a spatula to combine until just incorporated. If the dough seems too dry, add in milk one tablespoon at a time until you reach a soft but workable consistency.

Prepare Baking Sheets: Line your baking sheets with parchment paper for easy cookie removal.

Shape the Cookies: Scoop tablespoon-sized balls of dough onto the prepared baking sheets, placing them about 2 inches apart. Flatten them slightly with the palm of your hand.

Bake: Bake in the preheated oven for 8-10 minutes, or until the edges are lightly golden. The centers may appear soft but will firm up upon cooling.

Cool the Cookies: Remove the cookies from the oven and let them cool on the baking sheets for 5 minutes before transferring them to wire racks to cool completely.

Make the Frosting: In a bowl, beat the softened butter until creamy. Gradually add the powdered sugar and mix until combined. Add heavy cream, vanilla extract, and food coloring (if using), mixing until smooth and fluffy.

Frost the Cookies: Once the cookies are completely cooled, spread a layer of buttercream frosting on each cookie. Decorate with colorful sprinkles.

Serve and Enjoy: Your Holiday Sugar Cookies with Buttercream Frosting are ready to be enjoyed!
