Ingredients

6 medium ripe pears, peeled, cored, and sliced

1/2 cup brown sugar, packed

1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

1 tablespoon lemon juice

1/4 cup water

Optional: 1/2 cup raisins or dried cranberries for added texture

Instructions

Prep the Pears: Start by peeling, coring, and slicing the pears into even pieces for consistent cooking. If you're adding raisins or cranberries, set them aside.

Mix the Ingredients: In a large bowl, combine the brown sugar, ground cinnamon, nutmeg, vanilla extract, lemon juice, and water. Stir until the sugar is somewhat dissolved and the mixture is well incorporated.

Combine in Slow Cooker: Add the sliced pears to the slow cooker, and pour the sugar and spice mixture over them. If you're using raisins or cranberries, add them in at this stage. Gently stir to ensure all the pears are coated in the mixture.

Set the Slow Cooker: Cover the slow cooker with the lid and set it on low heat for 4-6 hours, or high heat for 2-3 hours. The pears should become tender and luscious.

Check Consistency: About halfway through the cooking time, check the consistency of the compote. If it's looking too dry, add a splash more water.

Finish and Serve: When the compote is done, give it a gentle stir to mix the flavors. Let it cool slightly before serving. The compote can be served warm or chilled as a topping for yogurt, pancakes, oatmeal, or even as a filling for pastries.

Store Leftovers: If you have any leftovers, let them cool completely and store them in an airtight container in the fridge for up to a week.
