Ingredients

1 lb ground beef (80/20 blend for flavor)

1 medium onion, thinly sliced

4 slices of rye bread (or Texas toast)

4 slices of American cheese (or your favorite cheese)

2 tbsp unsalted butter (for grilling)

1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce

Salt and black pepper, to taste

Instructions

Prepare the Beef: In a bowl, season the ground beef with Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper. Gently mix and form into two equal patties, about ½ inch thick.

Caramelize the Onions: In a skillet over medium heat, melt 1 tablespoon of butter. Add the sliced onions and cook, stirring occasionally, until they are soft and caramelized, about 15-20 minutes. Remove from the skillet and set aside.

Cook the Patties: In the same skillet, add the beef patties and cook over medium-high heat for about 3-4 minutes per side, or until they reach your desired doneness. During the last minute of cooking, place a slice of cheese atop each patty to melt.

Assemble the Patty Melt: Remove the patties from the skillet and let them rest momentarily. On the same skillet, add another tablespoon of butter. Place two slices of rye bread down, and layer each with a beef patty, caramelized onions, and a second slice of cheese. Top with another slice of rye bread.

Grill to Perfection: Cook the sandwich in the skillet for about 3-4 minutes on each side, or until the bread is golden brown and crispy, and the cheese is completely melted. Press down slightly with a spatula for an even grill.

Slice and Serve: Remove the patty melts from the skillet, slice in half if desired, and serve hot with pickles or your favorite dipping sauce.
