Ingredients

For the crust:

1 box of chocolate cake mix (about 15.25 oz)

1 large egg

½ cup unsalted butter, melted

For the gooey layer:

8 oz cream cheese, softened

3 large eggs

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

4 cups powdered sugar

½ cup unsweetened cocoa powder

1 cup chopped pecans

½ cup butter, melted

Instructions

Preheat the oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9x13-inch baking dish with non-stick spray or butter.

Prepare the crust: In a large mixing bowl, combine the chocolate cake mix, egg, and melted butter. Mix until smooth and well combined. The dough will be thick.

Spread the crust: Press the cake mixture evenly into the bottom of the prepared baking dish to form the crust. It doesn't have to be perfect; just make sure it's evenly distributed.

Make the gooey layer: In another mixing bowl, beat the softened cream cheese with an electric mixer until smooth. Add in the eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition. Then mix in the vanilla extract.

Add the dry ingredients: Gradually add the powdered sugar and cocoa powder to the cream cheese mixture, mixing on low speed until fully incorporated and smooth. Stir in the melted butter and then fold in the chopped pecans.

Combine layers: Pour the gooey cream cheese mixture over the chocolate cake crust. Use a spatula to gently spread it out evenly over the crust.

Bake the cake: Place the baking dish in the preheated oven and bake for 40-50 minutes. The top should look set with a slight jiggle in the middle, indicating it's still gooey.

Cool and serve: Remove the cake from the oven and allow it to cool in the pan on a wire rack for at least 30 minutes. Slice into squares and serve warm or at room temperature. For an extra treat, top with whipped cream or a scoop of vanilla ice cream!
