Ingredients

12 ounces spaghetti

1 pound ground beef or Italian sausage

1 medium onion, finely chopped

3 cloves garlic, minced

1 can (28 ounces) crushed tomatoes

1 can (15 ounces) tomato sauce

2 teaspoons dried Italian herbs (basil, oregano, thyme)

1 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional)

Salt and pepper to taste

1 cup ricotta cheese

1 large egg

2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese, divided

1 cup grated Parmesan cheese

Fresh basil or parsley for garnish

Instructions

Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).

Cook Spaghetti: Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Add spaghetti and cook according to package instructions until al dente. Drain and set aside.

Prepare Meat Sauce: In a large skillet over medium heat, add the ground beef or sausage. Cook until browned, breaking it into small pieces. Add the chopped onion and cook until soft, about 5 minutes. Stir in the minced garlic and cook for an additional minute until fragrant.

Add Tomatoes: Pour in the crushed tomatoes and tomato sauce, then stir in the Italian herbs, red pepper flakes (if using), salt, and pepper. Simmer the sauce for about 10-15 minutes, allowing flavors to meld together. Remove from heat.

Mix Cheese Filling: In a medium bowl, combine ricotta cheese, egg, and half of the shredded mozzarella. Season with a pinch of salt and pepper.

Combine Spaghetti and Sauce: In a large mixing bowl, combine the cooked spaghetti with the meat sauce, mixing until the pasta is evenly coated.

Layer Casserole: In a greased 9x13-inch baking dish, spread half of the spaghetti mixture on the bottom. Spoon the ricotta mixture over the spaghetti, then top with the remaining spaghetti mixture. Sprinkle the top evenly with the remaining mozzarella and all of the Parmesan cheese.

Bake Casserole: Cover the dish with aluminum foil and bake in the preheated oven for 25 minutes. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 15-20 minutes, or until the cheese is bubbly and golden brown.

Garnish and Serve: Once baked, allow the casserole to cool for a few minutes. Garnish with fresh basil or parsley before serving.
