12 oz penne pasta

1 lb Italian sausage (sweet or spicy, based on your preference)

1 red bell pepper, sliced

1 yellow bell pepper, sliced

1 medium onion, sliced

3 cloves garlic, minced

1 can (14 oz) crushed tomatoes

1 cup marinara sauce

1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese

1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese

2 tablespoons olive oil

1 teaspoon dried oregano

1 teaspoon dried basil

Salt and pepper to taste

Fresh basil leaves for garnish (optional)

Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).

    Cook the Pasta: Bring a large pot of salted water to boil. Add the penne pasta and cook according to the package instructions until al dente. Drain and set aside.

      Sauté Vegetables: In a large skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the sliced onion and bell peppers, cooking until they become tender, about 5-7 minutes. Add the minced garlic and sauté for another 2 minutes until fragrant.

        Brown the Sausage: Push the veggies to the side of the skillet and add the Italian sausage. Break it apart with a spatula and cook until it’s browned and cooked through, about 8-10 minutes.

          Combine Ingredients: Once the sausage is cooked, stir in the crushed tomatoes, marinara sauce, dried oregano, dried basil, salt, and pepper. Allow it to simmer for 5 minutes so the flavors meld.

            Mix Pasta and Sauce: In a large mixing bowl, combine the cooked penne pasta with the sausage and pepper mixture, mixing thoroughly to ensure the pasta is well-coated with the sauce.

              Bake the Dish: Transfer the mixture into a greased 9x13 inch baking dish. Sprinkle shredded mozzarella and grated Parmesan evenly over the top.

                Bake: Place the baking dish in the preheated oven and bake for 25-30 minutes or until the cheese is bubbly and golden brown.

                  Garnish and Serve: Remove from the oven and let it cool for a few minutes. Garnish with fresh basil leaves before serving.
