Ingredients

1 pound ground turkey

1 cup sharp cheddar cheese, grated

2 fresh jalapeños, finely chopped (seeds removed for less heat)

1/4 cup breadcrumbs (preferably panko)

1/4 cup finely chopped red onion

1 clove garlic, minced

1 teaspoon smoked paprika

1 teaspoon ground cumin

Salt and pepper, to taste

1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce

1 tablespoon olive oil (for cooking)

4 whole wheat burger buns

Optional toppings: Avocado slices, lettuce, tomato, and additional jalapeños

Instructions

Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

Prepare the Turkey Mixture: In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground turkey, grated cheddar cheese, chopped jalapeños, breadcrumbs, red onion, garlic, smoked paprika, ground cumin, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper. Mix until just combined, being careful not to overwork the turkey to keep the burgers tender.

Form the Patties: Divide the mixture into four equal portions and shape them into burger patties, about 3/4 inch thick. Place the patties on the prepared baking sheet.

Bake the Burgers: Drizzle a little olive oil on top of each patty. Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, or until the internal temperature reaches 165°F (74°C) and the burgers are cooked through.

Toast the Buns: In the last few minutes of baking time, place the burger buns cut-side up on a separate baking sheet and toast them in the oven until golden brown, about 3-5 minutes.

Assemble the Burgers: Once cooked, remove the patties from the oven and let them rest for a couple of minutes. Assemble the burgers by placing a patty on the bottom half of each toasted bun and adding your choice of toppings like avocado, lettuce, tomato, and extra jalapeños.

Serve: Cap with the top half of the buns and serve hot with your favorite sides like sweet potato fries or a fresh salad.
