Ingredients

1 pound ground beef

1/2 cup onion, finely chopped

1/2 cup breadcrumbs

1 egg

1 teaspoon salt

1/2 teaspoon black pepper

1 teaspoon garlic powder

1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce

1 can (10.5 oz) cream of mushroom soup

1 can (15 oz) sliced mushrooms, drained

1 cup beef broth

2 cups mashed potatoes (prepared, either homemade or store-bought)

1 cup shredded cheddar cheese

Fresh parsley, chopped (for garnish)

Instructions

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9x13 inch baking dish with cooking spray or butter.

Prepare the hamburger mix: In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, chopped onion, breadcrumbs, egg, salt, black pepper, garlic powder, and Worcestershire sauce. Mix well until all ingredients are fully incorporated.

Form patties: Shape the beef mixture into 4-6 oval or round patties, about 1-inch thick.

Brown the patties: In a large skillet over medium heat, brown the hamburger steaks on both sides for about 3-4 minutes per side, until they develop a nice crust. This step adds depth of flavor.

Layer the ingredients: In the prepared baking dish, place the browned patties in a single layer. Pour the cream of mushroom soup over the patties followed by the sliced mushrooms. Gently pour the beef broth around the edges to avoid disturbing the patties.

Add mashed potatoes: Spread the prepared mashed potatoes evenly over the top of the patties and soup mixture. Smooth it out with a spatula or the back of a spoon.

Sprinkle with cheese: Finally, sprinkle the shredded cheddar cheese generously on top of the mashed potatoes.

Bake the dish: Cover the baking dish with foil and bake in the preheated oven for 30 minutes. After 30 minutes, remove the foil and bake for an additional 15-20 minutes, or until the cheese is bubbly and golden.

Garnish and serve: Once cooked, take the dish out of the oven and let it sit for a few minutes. Garnish with chopped parsley before serving. Enjoy your delicious Homestyle Amish Hamburger Steak Bake!
